I have an older Compaq Presario 9546 PC with a S3 Trio chip set and am experiencing some similar problems which start with a crashed hard drive and a reinstall of all software. It appears that using an incorrect S3 driver set (more than 1 file type) like the "S3 Trio32/64 PCI" would lock up the display and the computer after a couple of clicks in IE or Netscape. Once I switched to the "S3 Trio 64V + PCI" driver that problem with computer/screen locking up went away. Now, after downloading a Halloween screen saver, I've got some real problems with the 800x600 256 color resolution setting from with the QuickRes (quick change) software. The screen shrinks to about 1/2 the vertical height and rolls like the old TV with the vertical control twisted. QuickRes Choices: 640x480 256 colors 800x600 256 colors 1024x768 256 colors 640x480 HiColor (16 bit) 800x600 HiColor (16 bit) I suspect that the refresh rate was changed somehow with the screen saver install and I'm trying to find a software video display utility to change the refresh rates back to what I hope was the original settings. Any help would be appreciated. As for the original question on only 1 resolution: My display drivers that are installed and that I can choose from don't say anything about the extra numbers that S3 Inc is showing on their driver downloads. My choices don't show any of the 7xx numbers only S3 Trio or S3 Vision with 32 or 64 or 32/64 and then PCI or + PCI. There are a couple of others that are there. Good Luck!
