Memorex 6142U Driver Reviews

Had this same problem with my other computer, but the operating system was Win 2000 Pro. I was able to get the driver to work by uninstalling my Lexmark All In One printer, installing the scanner driver, then reinstalling the printer. The scanner then worked like a champ.

However, that trick doesn't work with Win XP Pro. The driver appears to install. It shows up on the Windows Add/Remove list of programs as a '42 bit scanner'. It also shows up as a Memorex 6142 driver. But a check with device manager shows it in Other with a question mark. The other odd thing is, the Lexmark printer is installed both under Printers and under Scanners and Cameras. I think this is coming from files Windows has stored on the hard drive.

I DL'd several utilities from Visioneer, which cleared out remnants of previous scanner installations from the registry and elsewhere. It also showed me how to look at and delete previous installs by clicking on Hidden Devices in Devices. It all made no difference. Windows can't find the driver.

I think the driver might work if I could get it to install so Windows can see it. I think Win is looking for an .inf file, which I can't find in the driver files. And yes, the driver files appear to be loaded in the i386 sub directory of Windows.

I don't know. I've done everything, tried every trick I know, and it just won't install so Windows can find it. Will appreciate any suggestions, as I really don't want to buy another scanner when I know this one works fine. Thanx.
