Microsoft SideWinder Precision 2: This is the ONLY version of Microsoft SideWinder 4.0 Game Controller Software that will work with, and provide full button programmability for, Microsoft Sidewinder Precision 2 Joystick. No other Sidewinder 4.0 software (such as one for Force Feedback, Gamepad or Racing wheel) will work.

MS Sidewinder Precision 2 is a great joystick, but, as I am sure you know since you are here, there is no way to get the software for it if you lose the original CD, like I did. Microsoft does not post it.

While XP recognizes Sidewinder precision 2 on its own, it provides no way to assign any functions to the buttons. You need to install this software to do that.

Do not bother downloading any other versions of Sidewinder 4.0 software. It is decieving in a way

"Had the joystick for this software but couldn't find the cd. Also, I have an original Sidewinder Precision Racing Wheel that wouldn't work with it's own drivers due to being incompatible with Win10 x64. So I tried this and it recognizes my Precision Racing Wheel and it works in games like RaceRoom. Am very happy!"

"This Sidewinder 4.0 software does indeed work with XP. However the

"record" feature (error message) did not. You need to get into "Data Execution Prevention" found in Control Panel (System) and de-register the joy.cpl applet. Once you do that, voila, the record feature now works! Just Google the record feature error message for info on how to fix it.

"Good driver and worked well for me. Don't rush the install as like most Microsoft hardware drivers not a lot of thought has gone into the production on behalf of the customer"

How to Update Microsoft Sidewinder Precision 2 USB Device Drivers Quickly & Easily

Step 1 - Download Your Driver

How to Open Device Manager

  • In Windows 11, Windows 10 & Windows 8.1, right-click the Start menu and select Device Manager

  • In Windows 8, swipe up from the bottom, or right-click anywhere on the desktop and choose "All Apps" -> swipe or scroll right and choose "Control Panel" (under Windows System section) -> Hardware and Sound -> Device Manager

  • In Windows 7, click Start -> Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Device Manager

  • In Windows Vista, click Start -> Control Panel -> System and Maintenance -> Device Manager

  • In Windows XP, click Start -> Control Panel -> Performance and Maintenance -> System -> Hardware tab -> Device Manager button

How to Install a driver from Device Manager

  1. Locate the device and model that is having the issue and double-click on it to open the Properties dialog box.

  2. Select the Driver tab.

  3. Click the Update Driver button and follow the instructions.

In most cases, you will need to reboot your computer in order for the driver update to take effect.
