"This is the real Riptide driver for the 90079. There are some install problems with win98 that require after using the zip installer, you must find the drivers with the 'hardware wizard'. Also there are some files missing, but doesn't cause a problem."

"I agree to use www2.driverguide.com/uploads/uploads9/30250.html for Win2000 anyway. Not because I tried rip417na but because the driver at the other location is only around 400k which fits nicely on a floppy. You just extract to C drive and reboot. Worked great. I wonder what's with the 3.2mb size?"

"XP Service Pack 1, and possibly just plain old XP, will install this modem as HSP if you go to hardware and click on update driver. Do the auto detect from there. It works fine after that."

"You people don't know how to do anything do you. I downloaded this file and it does work. You need to use a program like WINRAR to extract the files. "I wish to heck we could edit previous reviews because (hello?) sometimes I make mistakes. In rating a much larger version of this package I said it all worked fine but truth was, the modem evidently got a driver from elsewhere -- not from that download. I found that out when I formatted the HD on another machine and started from scratch.

KEY FACT: IF YOU DON'T KNOW

THIS YOU MIGHT NEVER GET THIS CARD WORKING. There are at least TWO (probably THREE) versions of this card. They look very much alike, most numbers are the same, but they need different drivers and are applicable to different computers.

90079 (NO suffix) is the oldest card. It does all the audio processing (pre-AC '97) AND it has an HCF (hardware) modem. THIS card is almost perfectly supported by this (RIP417NA) download. You must find 'genmidi.wsl' somewhere else and point the Win installer to it when it complains that it can't find that name: I THINK that file is in a download that's about 1.3meg -- audiomodemcombo or something like that. Everything else is covered in this download.

This card will show up in your Device Manager as about five devices -- audio, joystick, modem, and a couple more. It has only one entry in 'add/remove software' table: When you uninstall that one, everything goes away.

To install this support, remove any support currently installed, double click the downloaded EXE to extract its files. Know where your Genmidi.wsl file is. Double click the Install.exe that was extracted. When it finishes, restart and Win 98 will loop through discovering and installing the necessary drivers, asking only about the Genmidi file. You should now have proper function for all the stuff this card does.

90079-2 is the 'new' card. It has AC '97 audio, meaning that the digital part of the processing is done on the MOBO so it needs different drivers AND must be used with a computer and OS that does the on MOBO part of the processing. The card only has an audio amp -- no real audio processing.

This card ALSO has an HSF (software) modem. That is, most of the modem's work is done by a program running in the CPU. So again you have to have the right drivers. When looking at driver packages several modules will have either HSF... or HCF... as their name and if a package doesn't have the ones matching your card it's a waste of time to try to install it.

These cards can be distinguished by the Model Number, found near the left middle on the back side -- either 90079 or 90079-2. Also, the HSF (-2) cards lack the modem chip which is an RDSP020, about 3/4" square near the lower right on the front of the card. THE FCC IDs (AND OTHER NUMBERS) ARE IDENTICAL and most people seem to think the two cards are interchangeable, but they are not.

Is there a 90079-1? Probably. And probably it either has AC '97 audio and an HCF modem or 'early' audio and an HSF modem but I've no idea which.

In most cases the best bet will be the card shipped with the machine you're installing it on. EBay is a good source, they're cheap, and you can tell from the picture which is which. It is possible to install the early card on other PCI machines, for example if you are slot-challenged; i have two of 'em on early Dell machines used for old games.
