"loaded it and followed directions - i can get the "noise" out of the speakers but not PC sounds or music

it's sooo cool that this guy took the time to make this software

i hope i'm just doing something silly or wrong

i'm running (at work)

XP pro

USB connected to the SUB woffer - the GUI works and the "noise" works - all other sounds come

"Driver allows to use again Altec Lansing speaker sytem. It got knocked off by XP installation. I re-loaded also MontegoII A3D Audiostation32.Interestingly it is now posible to use Windows Media Player and control all sound with ADA 305 GUI, which is the substitute for ACS-495.

"The instructions delivered with the driver are for XP. For Windows 2000 Pro, use the XP driver and follow the instructions below. These are somewhat from memory. I stepped through them after a successful install, but the actual steps were slightly different due to my system state when I installed it. Take this as a guideline but not as the precise steps.

1) If you have

a failed driver installation (shows in Device Manager with a yellow exclamation point under the node for "Universal Serial Bus controllers"), uninstall it. Right click on it, pick Properties, pick Driver tab, pick Uninstall.

You don't need to do #1, obviously, if the driver isn't installed.

2) Unplug USB cable that goes the Altec Lansing subwoofer.

3) Reboot.

4) Log in. Then plug in the USB cable. Windows will install the wrong driver, probably. Let it do this. The last screen of the "Found New Hardware" wizard MAY say "The installation failed because a function driver was not specified for this device instance." In any case, don't be surprised if the driver fails to install properly, indicated by a yellow exlamation point in the Device Manager (Windows picked the wrong driver).

5) Pick the right driver to install. One way or the other, you need to update the driver. I think the Found New Hardware wizard gives you this option, or else do it manually by right clicking on the device in Device Manager, pick Properties, pick Drivers tab, pick Update Driver. The wizard and the manual method get you to the same UI, steps described following.

6) One the screen allows you to pick from 2 radio buttons. Pick "Display a list of the known drivers..."

7) You see a list of drivers. To be safe, ignore them, even if one of them looks correct. Pick the Have Disk button.

8) Click Browse, and navigate to the downloaded driver package and point to the location you unzipped it to, such as \temp\AMS24\Drivers\WindowsXP (assumes you've unzipped the package by double clicking on AMS24XP.exe)

9) Click Next, etc. until you're finished. If it asks for al60.sys, point to the same folder as #8 above. At the last wizard screen, you should get a friendly message that the software is installed. Reboot.

When I shut down to reboot on my system, I got a blue STOP screen with DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE. If you do as well, then just hit the reset button. Everything seems to be OK.

When the system comes back up, navigate to \temp\AMS24\ and run <ALTEC LANSING Audio Management Software.msi>. Your set! You will see an icon like an sideways hourglass in your system tray, which is the software to control the speakers.
