Installer for Win95/98 Driver ver. 4.06.1026 (DirectX6 Certified) with "Restart in MS-DOS" mode support
This happens to be the onboard chip for the "mythical" Intel SE440BX-3 mobo (which is really just an SE440BX-2 with the onboard audio option. It was produced by Intel as an OEM mainboard for DELL's Dimension XPS Txxx series
After several weeks, I have tried numberous allegedly compatible drivers from: Intel, Yamaha, Driverguide.com, and even DELL. They all give me the same exact result...DOS Audio only! Absolutely none of the 10+ driver packages that I've tried result in audio in Windows 98SE.
Since this PC is a new system that I'm building for a friend as a freebee computer, I decided to experiment. I reformated the HDD and installed Win2K, instead of Win98SE. Oddly enough, IT detected the Yamaha audio, related hardware (game ports, etc), and installed the proper drivers without any problems whatsoever.
SO...if you find yourself stuck with a DELL OEM "SE440BX-2 with audio" like the one I mistakenly got from Centrix Internation Corp and you need the proper audio drivers...just install Windows 2000 and NOT Window 98/SE. It will save you a LOT of aggravation :)"
