"Tried many different ways to install this driver, best I could get, scanner worked slowly on B/W, locked up on colour. Gave up and bought new scanner! (On XP Pro)."

"We've had 2 full days of trying to get the scanner working on Windows 2000 after our pc crashed and we couldn't get it to reload Windows 98 so had to load Windows 2000. What a nightmare!! In the end using the update.exe seems to have made a difference, but I'm not sure what else we did that actually made it work again. We can't believe that the scanner is working again! Th

"Installing the standard package and drivers from the CD appeared successful i.e. no yellow blob in device manager (which shows the scanner under "Imaging Devices"). However, the scanner didn't work and the ASPI error message appeared. Following Darren Clark's procedure made it work fine. Thanks Darren."

"Difficult to install correctly but works fine once installed, the trick is to install as per enclosed instructions, hook up scanner and when it attmempts to install P&P device force the driver to install the update .exe file enclosed. This means typing in the exact address and filename including .exe suffix of the update exe file under the 'specify location' option. (

"Installed original driver within XP Professional for my BW9636 USB and did not want to know every time I tried to use the scanner error came up scanner not initiating no scanner installed so tried this new driver and hey presto superb everything now working absolutely fine scanner back to its original superb self and saved me £100 plus because I did not need to go and buy

"I tried this but had no luck getting my BW9636 to work on XP - I had better luck with another driver download on this site for the scanner. I followed the instructions, but no luck. And I guess prortys means properties?"

"This was for a neighbour who's son donated a Blackwidow scanner. It worked under ME OK but not XP when we upgraded his OS.

This driver installed without any protest in very short time and all was solved. We needed the original drivers first though"

"Try as I did, I could not get the scanner working with an XP Professional SP2 installation. Virus checking off, programs shut down etc. but in the end I had to restore the system using XP restore utility. Sorry but it's likely a problem with my installation?. I will of course be using your site for future driver upgrades but some old equipment which still functions fine is

"Kept getting the "Error - ASPI for Windows is not initialised" message. Added wowpost.exe & mmsystem.dll into my system directory, ran the update.exe program in the 9636usb2000 directory and followed Andrew King's advise (15 Nov 2002) i.e. installed original driver. Not sure which step corrected (or if you need to do all three) but all is now working."

"I've tried following the instructions found on earlier postings re 9636usb.zip (and similar) all making use of gene.inf (10/07/2000). Cannot get the thing to work. Before I load the update, there is no yellow warning against the device, so all appears to be OK - except it just does not work. The install driver wizard only shows the 9636 for parallel or serial ports - so

"Hi, we had the same problems as most, but do as 'grin' suggests on feb 18 2003 and all becomes cushty. Scanner now works thro photoshop 6. cheers matey."

"followed instructions to the letter, but xp installation wizard can't recognize the file, even though it has been unzipped by windows xp (go figure!!) something is still amiss....do I need to change my parallel port settings in the bios or something? anyone else had this problem? any help appreciated."

"If you have any difficulties, the #1 cause is a dodgy enumeration of the device. To fix this right click on the device in device manager, then uninstall. Next click on scan for hardware changes. This should find the device and install it. Often this fixes installs that have gone a bit awry. Try it, what have you to lose?"

"Yes it works. Thanks Mick. Instructions could be a little clearer for IT numpties. Update stage didn't work through system properties. However double clicking on the update icon in the unzipped USB2000 folder did the trick. Scanner now back to full operation."

"NEED HELP!! I have the 9636 Pro SCSI version, and to be frank Devcom's support has left me amazed as being the worst ever.. does ANYONE know where I can get a win200 driver for this scanner?? (as far as Devcom are concerned I should just throw it in the bin or stick with win98 (no way!). Thanks!"

"Thank you so much for this driver it worked fine. what a brill person. Devcom will supply this driver for u for £20.00 on a burnt CD. and its here free in all its glory. "Thanks to Roger I persevered. If you follow the instructions to the letter it really does work! After running the fix I had to force XP to update the driver to the old one by going to START - CONTROL PANEL - PERFORMANCE & MAINTENANCE - HARDWARE TAB - DEVICE MANAGER and then update the driver to the one on my origial Black Widow CD (USBDRV98 I think) Good luck!"

"After a bit of head-scratching during the install and a few ASPI Not Initialised problems, I finally got this working and it's now fine. Replace the recommended instructions with this....

After downloading and unpacking the ZIP,

1) Install 9636 USB first, i.e. 9636usb\Setup.exe

2) Ensure scanner is now powered up and connected.
