"I went through that whole rigamaroll of signing up for an account to get this driver and the install and remove function do not work."

"The install program did nothing; didnt even generate a message.

So I used device manager to point it to the inf file,

and device manager said "Windows was unable to find a driver for this device".

Maybe it was the wrong driver; but linux identifies the sound hardware as intel 82028 (camino 2) AC97 audio, which is what is listed here.
