"Definitely a NO-GO with WinXP. Had an identical 'spare' modem with same symptoms under XP (modem never hangs up line, only connects if I 'interrupt' the dialling sequence and dial manually with a separate phone)

Modem has been renamed to Phil (as in "Land-Fill")"
