After loading Win 2000 if you get the following symptoms ghosting of windows, text diaappearing, and failure to shut down, all within a few minutes of boot up then you have the wrong video driver. This happens with on board video namely the VIA 8501 chipset which is found on some Compaq laptops. My mother board was a 585LMR which has the same chipset and problem. To determine what video hardware you have on board, during boot up, press the pause key when a table appears listing all the peripheral devices just before Windows loads. Look for video adapter in the table. The video adapter will list a vendor Id of 1023 which is Trident but is really a VIA chip and the device ID is 8400. Download the driver, upzip it in a TEMP folder, uninstall your existing video driver, then click on SETUP.
