"I scanned this Zip File (sj653mu.exe) HP 4100c scanner diver before unzipping the files, scanned with Ewido Anti-Spy and also with AVG Virus scanner "NO VIRUS" or "SpyWare" files were found in the download zip files. Clean Download and installed OK, works fine with HP ScanJet 4100c Scanner. David"

"As I understood the description, this driver was supported by Vista but it would not install; gave the error that it was not supported by Windows 98 (so I tried compatability mode which did not work either). I then tried to install it in an SP computer and got fatal error. Got the same driver from the HP site and got the same errors so do not know what is up."

I downloaded and saved all 3 files -- sj398en.exe (main software package 25.9MB)---sj653mu.exe (smaller update patch 606KB)---update.exe (small update patch 28.7 KB) I setup the main program sj398en.exe ----rebooted---then moved the other 2 files (unexecuted)into C:/SCANJET. "Easy fix for ScanJet 4100c when it won't run under a new WinXP install: (Just before I truly lost my mind!)

Melissa on this board got it right ... here's details on how to get the 4100c to run after a clean WinXP install. (Works for me even with USB 2.0.)

"Driver (as taken from HP's site) didn't work. When I called HP and went through their phone maze I ended up talking with someone in India that wanted me to pay $25 an hour for support! Forget that! I'm going to buy a different brand scanner now and will never buy HP again!"

"There are NO drivers for this scanner for XP. HP wants you to buy a new scanner. If you upgraded XP from a previous OS then the upgrade drivers might work but not on a clean installation. I got my scanner working but I can not use Omnipage because there are no TWAIN drivers installed. THANX HP for your good service (NOT)."

"This driver plain and simple doesn't work. I did have luck though, removing the scanner from System Properties/Hardware and just let Xp load the proper drivers when I rebooted."

"First install the HP software pack for Win2000 (sj398en.exe - 24MB!). This includes Precision Scan and the Copy utility. Then install the above file (sj653mu.exe) which overwrites the small part of the Win 2000 software that doesn't work. Result = happiness!"

"Ok, I have XP and I got my lovely scanner to work. What Mick said on 12/22/02 works. I found the sj700en file posted by a guy named adam kotoki. First the scanner froze up, but I went to the sj700 folder, clicked setup.exe, ran it. It bombed the scanner a second time. I started the scanner a third time and it worked. I hope this helps people."

"I tried this and another file from Hp website (that was about 23MB as an automatic upgrade by Win.XP) and neihter worked. I miss my scanners good feature.It is almost paralized. HP should support its costomers better than this."

"The driver that comes with XP should make the scanner WORK....but you still won't be able to use the 4100c Software. You're limited to the "Scanner Wizard" that also comes with XP, essentially a limited, basic, software to use your scanner with. "I had the same problem... fatal error. This is the same driver that is available as an upgrade from Win 98 at the HP website. I need the full driver and HP says there is not one!"

"Hey thanks for the timely response, much appreciated. Now I did install the driver u sent me, but it returns a Fatal Error message and stops. What do I do ?"

"When I run this driver, it unzips everything, but then when it self-runs, it says "Fatal error. Setup is unable to continue" So I find the directory and it says "Unable to locate files" when I run setup from there. Any ideas what the problem may be? Please e-mail me."
