"The address (link) to the proper firmware update is - www.packardbell.co.uk/support/node909.asp But the CD burning software won't recognise the drive. I'm assuming it's driver related - but I can't find one for the SM-308B - the firmware update is the only thing out there!! Any ideas?!?"

"turns out everyone was right. this is a flash update, not a driver. i got a box when i ran the .exe file that said "Test" and the rest of the box was filled with ASCII or was that Russian?"

"Not totally useless. I booted up to dos and ran the dos program and it aparently updated something. What I am not sure. But rebooting caused it to install the drive again. Didn't fix the problem I was having though."
