"At the end of the install I got a message that there was an error with the device. The modem wouldn't work with Windows XP. I eventually had to change modems."

Before installing move to the device manager in the control panel and reinstall the driver for "PCI serial communication" by showing the installation path as this downloaded driver.after installation just you have to make a proper port selection for your internal modem by selecting the tab "advanced port
