the BIOS to version 125). I used Jason's solution to help solve the problem, as follows. First I updated the BIOS to version 128. To do this, I created an MS-DOS startup disk in Windows XP and copied the following files to it ABITFAE, AWDFLASH, RUNME, beh70, and a beh70 Notepad file. [Roughly at this stage I would have shut down and moved my hard drive to the Primary HPT Controller]. I rebooted with the floppy in the drive (making sure Floppy is First Boot Device) and typed runme at the prompt. Once the system was finished updating the BIOS, I unplugged the power cable (there is no other way to exit), changed the CMOS jumper setting from 1-2 to 2-3 for one minute, and then put it back to 1-2. I then reconnected the power supply. When I booted the system, I got an error message about the CPU frequency. All I had to do here is change the CPU Operating Frequency from 233 to 433 in the Soft Menu III Setup in the BIOS (433 being the original speed setting I used to see on boot, when my hard drive was connected to the ordinary IDE channel). Once that problem had been fixed, I went back into the BIOS and selected CD-ROM as First Boot Device. I booted from the Windows XP Pro CD and hit F6 when prompted to install SCSI or RAID devices, installed the HPT366 Controller driver from a floppy (see Jason's notes), ignored all the warning messages along the way, and eventually got Windows installed! In Device Manager, two new entries appeared under the new category ‘SCSI and RAID Controllers’, both named ‘Highpoint Technology Inc. Hpt366 Ultra DMA 66 Controller’. Finally, there are a few things to note. If you have a setup like mine, with the two white HPT366 SCSI slots and the two black IDE slots, you must be careful with your BIOS settings. My hard drive is connected to one of the HPT366 Controllers and is considered Primary Master by the High Point BIOS (blue), where it runs in UMDA 2 mode. Apparently, you cannot therefore connect your CD-ROM drive or other device as Master on the Primary IDE Channel. The Master setting on the Primary HPT 366 Controller seems to override the Master setting on the Primary IDE Channel. So in the main BIOS I had to set my CD-ROM drive to Slave. I subsequently connected a Plextor 48/12/48A drive to the Secondary IDE Channel and set it to Master. This configuration works fine. Thanks Jason, Mark Dublin, Ireland."
